“Bless the Lord, O my soul,” I bet you haven’t taken much thought of the phrase, “O my soul.” As I’ve observed from many, the sincerity of their praise to God is not fully devoted as David wrote this psalm, and I’ll be the first to admit that my walk with God hasn’t been full-on “Bless the Lord, O my soul.” Yet, God is worthy to be praised, worthy to be honored, worthy to be acknowledged, and we, in our mere flesh, are weak and defeated.
“Bless the Lord, O my soul,” even in our weakness, our devotion is to God Almighty. Our goal is to walk in the light of God. Our actions should reflect a constant battle against our fleshly desires by submitting our whole being under the lordship of Jesus Christ. Giving it all to Him and I’m not just talking laments. I’m talking in all that we do, it is to give glory to God the Father who has provided a Redeemer; to God the Son, Jesus Christ, who has followed through with the preordained plan; to God the Holy Spirit who bears witness to our spirit that we are children of God.
“Bless the Lord, O my soul,” when I stumble, He picks me up. When I grow weak, He is there to strengthen me. When I grieve, He comforts me. When I sin, He forgives me. My soul has been found precious in His sight. Not because of anything that I have done, but because He first loved me. He taught me righteousness. He taught me holiness. He taught me to “walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Col 1:10). So, bless the Lord, Oh my soul.
